In Buriganga river area,200 tanneries produced 95% of Bangladesh’s leather output.

 

Estimated 22,000 cubic meters of environmentally hazardous waste a day into the Buriganga River.

 

While 15,000 people worked there, waste was poured directly into the river from which over 180,000 people get their drinking water, now permanently polluted.

 

In 2013 the district was classified as the 5th most polluted place in the world.

Chromium 4,1500 times higher than the standard recommended values by NEQS. (2075 mg/L v.s. 0.05mg/L )

​

The heavy metal contamination will cause cancer, disfiguring and amputated limbs, skin diseases, respiratory diseases and in the end will lead to death.
